AMAFA/HERITAGE KZN

Amafa/Heritage KZN has called for nominations for its annual awards to groups and individuals that have contributed voluntarily to preserving the province’s heritage.

Plaques and certificates will be handed to the award winners in a ceremony at the Ascot Inn, Pietermaritzburg, on September 16.

Nominees have to be unpaid volunteers who have worked for the preservation of heritage over a period of time. Typically they would be involved in maintaining and protecting buildings that are 60 or more years old; archaeological or rock art sites; important graves; battlefields; heritage objects 100 years old or more; and places of oral tradition.

Previous awards have been for: the writing of heritage literature; restoration of a historic water mill; erection of a clan memorial to the ancestors; organising heritage talks and outings; and continuation of the traditional fish trapping system.
